UX Designer

My creative spirit comes alive in the digital realm. With nimble fingers flying across the keyboard, I craft clear experiences out of nothing but ones and zeroes.

Background

Streamlining daily calculations for modern distillers

The Experience Distilled Calculator was created to be a simple, mobile-first tool that puts accurate, compliant calculations directly in the hands of distillers, reducing errors and saving valuable time on the production floor. The calculator was conceived as an extension of their broader consulting work, designed to support distilleries in operating more efficiently, staying compliant, and ultimately improving profitability through smarter, faster decision-making.

Problem

Distillers rely on slow, manual calculations

Critical gauging and proofing calculations are still commonly performed using printed TTB charts, spreadsheets, or manual formulas. These methods are time-consuming, prone to human error, and disruptive to fast-paced production workflows.

This creates friction in day-to-day tasks and increases the risk of compliance mistakes. Eventually, this leads to lost time, inefficiency, and operational risk.

In an industry where margins are tight and regulatory accuracy is essential, relying on outdated tools directly impacts productivity and profitability.

Design

Simplifying complex distilling workflows

To translate highly technical gauging and proofing processes into an intuitive mobile experience, I focused on reducing cognitive load and aligning the interface with how distillers already work in the field. Many calculations involve multiple variables, unit systems, and conditional logic, so the primary challenge was presenting only what was necessary at each step.

I organized calculations into clear, task-based flows (e.g. increasing vs. decreasing proof, Brix vs. specific gravity), using segmented controls and progressive inputs to prevent users from entering irrelevant data. By grouping related fields and surfacing only the required inputs per method, the interface guides users through complex logic without exposing the underlying formulas.

As both UX Designer and Frontend Developer, I also prioritized mobile ergonomics—large tap targets, minimal scrolling, and fast reset actions—so users could perform repeated calculations quickly during active production. The result is a system that feels simple on the surface, while supporting the full complexity of professional distilling operations underneath.

Guided proof adjustment

Separates increase and decrease proof workflows to reduce errors and help users focus only on the inputs relevant to their task.

Flexible input methods

Allows distillers to switch between gross/tare weight or volume-based inputs, supporting different workflows and equipment setups without forcing a single approach.

Multiple measurement methods

Allows users to calculate potential ABV using either Brix or specific gravity, supporting different tools and measurement preferences in the field.

Quick reset for repeat calculations

Enables users to clear inputs instantly, making it easy to run multiple calculations back-to-back during active fermentation checks.

Impact

Early user adoption

Visitors struggled to understand what made One Vein Clinic different from competitors and what benefits they would receive.

Proof of concept for a niche market

In a highly specialized industry with a relatively small addressable user base, early adoption and positive feedback demonstrated strong product–market fit and confirmed the need for a dedicated, professional-grade calculation tool.

Foundation for future growth
The successful launch established a baseline for future iterations, enabling the team to prioritize feature expansion, improved UX, and deeper integration with Experience Distilled’s consulting services.
